GOC Commiserates with family of former first lady Agyemang Rawlings

A delegation from the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), led by its President, Mr. Richard Akpokavie, on Tuesday paid a condolence visit to the family of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, in Accra.

The late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of former President Jerry John Rawlings, passed away in Accra on October 23, 2025, at the age of 76.

Expressing his condolences, Mr. Akpokavie said the former first lady was a trailblazer of women empowerment of which sports was no exception.

"Our mother was a trailblazer of women empowerment and sports was not left at all. All the Presidents of the sports federations in Ghana, their role model has been your mother, her excellency Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.

Also because just a few weeks ago, Dr Zanetor was with us for the King's Baton relay, not only this one, she has always been with us."

The GOC President pledged his office’s support in ensuring that the former First Lady is accorded a befitting state burial.

Dr Zanetor Rawlings, Member of Parliament for the Klottey-Korle Constituency, described the period as an emotional rollercoaster from recently celebrating her mother with joy and smiles to now being overwhelmed with tears of grief.

She described her mother as a woman full of life, a sentiment that echoed through the many tributes being shared.

"We are consoled by her very personal stories about what she did for people, with people, and for the continent at large. One can only hope that when one should pass on, testimonies like this will not be made up but will flow the way these ones have for our late mother," She said.

The Member of Parliament expressed deep gratitude to the Ghana Olympic Committee for their support during this difficult time.

Present were Mr. Kobla Woyome, Member of Parliament for the South Tongu Constituency and Chairperson of the Government Relations and Stakeholders Subcommittee of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Mr. Mohammed Muniru Kassim, General Secretary, Mr. George Owusu Ansah, Board Member, Mr. Char
