
"We want to build a future through sports"-Chief of Staff
Mr. Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff of the Republic of Ghana has stated that the government is poised on building a stronger and more prosperous future through the transformative potential of sports.
He noted that young people who pursue sports as a career would be given priority and provided with the necessary support.
Mr. Debrah made the call during a brief ceremony where he officially unveiled Ghana’s baton for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
"President Mahama's government remains fully committed to identifying, nurturing, and developing talent across all disciplines. We are determined to build a future in which young people who choose sports as a career path are given the support they need to thrive," he said.
He noted that sports had been instrumental in shaping the careers of many renowned Ghanaians, including Azumah Nelson, Mike Ahey, Stanley Allotey, Magaret Simpson and Joshua Owusu, among others, providing them with platforms for greater opportunities.
He explained that these initiatives form part of the government’s efforts to collaborate with the Ghana Olympic Committee and other key stakeholders to ensure Ghana fields its best athletes on the global stage.
"Our aim is to ensure Ghanaian athletes are well-prepared to compete and to succeed-on the international stage. The era of unqualified athletes and officials representing Ghana at international events is over", he added.
The Chief of Staff noted that the Commonwealth Games have become increasingly scientific, demanding well-structured and comprehensive support systems for athletes.
He stressed that this development has prompted the government to invest in the training of professional athletes, coaches, sports scientists, dietitians, and physiotherapists.
Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee thanked the Chief of Staff for his continuous commitment to sports.
He mentioned that the Olympic movement will work hand in hand with the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams to ensure Ghana successfully participates in the Commonwealth Games.
The King's Baton Relay is a relay around the world held prior to the beginning of the Commonwealth Games which carries a message from the Head of the Commonwealth.
All 74 batons will be reunited at the opening ceremony of Glasgow 2026, where the final baton will be presented to His Majesty King Charles and the message will be read aloud to declare the Games open.
